In recent years, New Year’s Eve in Sesimbra has become one of the main attractions offered by the municipality. The town welcomes the thousands of visitors who are keen to start their New Year by watching the firework display over the bay.

This year the pyromusical show, featuring an ocean theme and based on the Scheherazade symphonic poem composed by Rimsky-Korsakov, will take place at two locations: Praia da Califórnia beach and Praia do Ouro beach.

The music event, to be held at the Santiago Fortress, a recently restored 17th century monument, will showcase the Cuban band Unión Salsera. The band will perform throughout the final hours of 2014 and on into the beginning of 2015. After the show, the entertainment will continue at numerous restaurants and bars that will remain open until dawn.

Maintaining a tradition that began back in 2007, about twenty divers will repeat the experience of beginning their New Year at the bottom of the ocean. Sponsored by the Town Council and the Turifórum business association, the Sesimbra New Year’s Eve gives an important boost to the local economy, particularly the restaurant and hotel industry.
